Car Enthusiast Jay Leno Embraces Driverless Cars

NBC's Harry Smith Talks with Jay Leno on why Leno Looks Forward to a Driverless Future

Harry Smith, reporting for  “On Assignment,” sits down with Jay Leno in his automobile "hanger" and gets Leno's forward looking thoughts on driverless cars(no one told Leno that he has to retrofit his 1971 Pantera). Smith also explores the driverless car revolution with the godfather of the technology, Sebastian Thrun, and Brad Templeton, a Silicon Valley pioneer who has worked on self-driving cars at Google. Smith tracks the movement’s origins from a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) challenge to current efforts of researchers racing to get self-driving cars on the road. The segment airs on  “On Assignment,” the limited series from “Dateline NBC,” airs on NBC Sunday, June 5 at 7 p.m. ET6 p.m. CT.  Check out the preview below.
