Design Advice

Image
Adobe software never stops being frustrating. Learn to write, and not school-style writing. A text editor is a perfectly viable design tool. Graphic design has just as much to do with words as it does with pictures, and a lot of my favorite designers come to design from the world of words instead of the world of pictures. If you meet a person who cares about the same obscure things you do, hold on to them for dear life. Sympathy is medicine. Scissors are good, music is better, and mixed drinks with friends are best. Start brave and brash: you can always make things more conservative, but it’s hard to make things more radical. From blog.frankchimero.com ( share this quote ) Stop trying to be cool: it is stifling. From blog.frankchimero.com ( share this quote ) Seeking advice is addicting and can become a proxy for action. Giving it can also be addicting in a potentially pretentious, soul-rotting sort of way, and can replace experimenting because you think you know how things work...

Amy Stein: Domesticated

Image
Amy Stein creates amazing dioramas that explore her own version of natural history in her photographic series called "Domesticated." The photographs in this series were inspired after meeting a number of taxidermists and becoming interested in the psychology behind venturing into the wild to kill an animal and then paying a considerable amount of money to reanimate it and make it a permanent fixture in the living room. "To me this practice came to perfectly symbolize our schizophrenic relationship with the natural world. We consciously insulate ourselves from the wild around us and the wild within us, and then we subconsciously long to reconnect with the natural world. The images often involve re-creations of real stories of human and animal encounters in a small town in Pennsylvania that borders a forest. Once she has a story that she finds interesting, she researches the behavior of the animal involved, scouts locations, casts people and secures the appropriate taxide...

Do schools kill creativity?

Thread

Image
In September I was invited to be on the guest list of a very cool event called Thread . I went to the website and saw all these 20 something girls shopping off racks in the photos, I then thought to myself that this was gonna be as cool as going to forever 21 and watching girls shop. But I was forced to go and i'm really glad I did cause those photos did not do this event justice. There were lots of bad ass independent designers from all over the place. I ended up buying an organic cotton hat from The Organik a couple of super enthusiastic dudes were working the booth. The Organik is from Hawaii and they are very passionate about the eco, green, sustainable lifestyle. Next up on my highlight list were the san francisco brothers of Artefacture, they were very design heavy, seemed like the type of guys who really really get into font type faces. The star of the show had to be the crew from Sole Junkie they custom paint sneakers or rather the very talented bronx boy Steven Cedre Jr...

Steam Punk

Image
Retro-futurism is all the rage these days: antique computers, 8-bit game art, classic cases for modern gear, anything to make the onslaught of new technology less disposable. The yearning for timelessness in a constantly renewing tech culture has led to a spike in interest in the steam-powered, brass-encrusted world of steampunk .

Catherine David

Image
Auckland-based designer Catherine David's shower curtains are just one item that are making a splash in the world of designer houseware. A winner of New Zealand's Home and Entertaining Design awards in 2005, these high-quality soap and mold resistant nylon curtains are an artistic canvas for an assortment of David's designs. And yes, you can get your choice of colors. I'm also into the side table, which features an image of a man trying to get out of the box. Catherine Davis Designs also manufacturers some intriguing lamps. Many have their designs printed on the reverse side, so that the image isn't visible until the lamp is illuminated—making a very pleasing surprise. There's a variety of styles and different types of items, all of which are available on the site's online store .
