Robot Turtles - Board Game Teaches Kids To Think Code

Image
Nerd Stalker interview with Dan Shapiro inventor of Robot Turtles . Robot Turtles is a board game you play with your favorite 3-8 year old kids. It sneakily teaches the fundamentals of programming. Robot Turtles launched on Kickstarter, where it became the bestselling board game of all time. Which is pretty darn amazing. The Kickstarter campaign is over. 1,500 copies went up on the Make Magazine store and they sold out in 8 hours. Now there are a few copies at http://buy.robotturtles.com . For you Robot Turtle aficionados make sure to get the e-book here  and use the code " kickstarter " to get $5 off the ebook . We must admit that we secretly bought Robot Turtles under a private name so as to experience the whole fulfillment process like a general consumer would. We received it prior to the holidays despite the hot demand for the game. I sprung Robot Turtles on my six year old daughter who was thrilled with the game. In no time she ran through the basics t...

Do you want to experience the real forces of an F1 car without the car?

Image
I introduce to you the Graviton G6 high-end professional driving simulator which lets you experience real forces of an F1 car. The G6 is a head mounted force feedback interface. Simply put it is a driving simulator which lets you feel the forces of the car. They have found that most of the force is felt on the head that led them to design the G6, to give you an immersive feel of the virtual vehicle. This is because the weight of the head makes the neck muscles work harder, and this is also felt by the inner ear which is the main sensor of balance and movement of the human body. By not releasing a whole body solution they are able to reduce the price, offer larger force feedback, be more accurate with faster response time, and it can be integrated in any racing cockpit. They did extensive prototyping with professional and regular drivers. They found that most of the race car drivers did not like racing games because they did not provide enough realism compared to their ac...

School of Dragons The Dreamworks Game

Image
Adolfo Foronda of Nerd Stalker interviews Michael Domaguing, Director of Product Marketing at Jumpstart . Jumpstart is featuring a 3-D MMO RPG game called " School of Dragons " based on DreamWorks animated movie " How To Train A Dragon ". The game looks like a ton of fun, your kid can actually fly a dragon, multiple dragons really. Your child will recognize all the familiar characters from the movie. Believe it or not the game is free although there are monthly subscription options and in game purchase options. The game runs on the unity platform via any web browser (iOS and Android apps are coming) so no gaming hardware is needed. The game is ever-expanding and given that it is web-based you will see updates as they release them. At first we thought this was strictly entertainment but there is a science educational angle to the site as well. Under their resources section there are science worksheets, experiments, activities and a page on the scie...

Foc.us A Biohacking Headset to Improve Your Game

Image
Nerd Stalker interviews Michael Oxley, Founder of Foc.us , Foc.us is a headset that passes a small electric current through the prefrontal cortex of the wearer and claims increased performance. We've seen a great deal of interest from biohackers however Michael insists that although there may be other use cases for Foc.us they are squarely targeting gamers. I got to try the foc.us out at the O'reilly Bay Area Maker Faire and was very impressed with the actual sensation I felt across my brain note my odd serious stare is due to the sensation being in effect. I can't speak to increased focus as it was a quick test and not a full use case however we do plan on getting a review unit and giving our readers our thoughts when that happens in July. What we really love about the unit is the price ($249), Michael did say that the unit is aggressively priced on purpose and the fact that they are not seeking additional funding gives the founders the flexibility to make this smart b...
