IEEE Senior Member & USC Professor Jeffrey Miller Discusses Hurdles that Autonomous Vehicles Must Overcome With the excitement of autonomous vehicles comes the hurdles that the fledgling industry must make. Recently, the IEEE engaged in a round table discussion and subsequent survey on how the public perceives autonomous vehicles. The survey showed that the public is weary about safety, This week we spoke with Dr. Jeffrey Miller, senior member and professor of engineering at the University of Southern California where he shared his insight both from the round table discussion and the concerns from the survey. The survey results amongst IEEE social media followers showed safety and trust as the major concerns of this technology. As Dr. Miller points out in the interview, the Google car miles only represents 10 minutes in the LA freeway system. Give it a view!

What Happens When You Ping 4 Million IP Addresses

Image
What happens when you ping 4 million IP Addresses? You find out about the internet's habits around the world. That is exactly what Dr. John Heidemann at USC's Information Sciences Institute did and his research team found out that the internet does indeed sleep. We published their findings a few weeks ago but we decided to dive deep with Dr. Heidemann and discuss what some of his findings mean especially to regulatory agencies like the FCC. His team released the f irst modern day internet census in 2006 and he shares some insight into what the internet of today and the internet of 2006 differs. Next time you see him ask him if his data can predict earthquakes? Check out the interview.

Photo Courtesy of University of Southern California The Nerd Stalkers received news that researchers from the University of Southern California(USC)  studying how big the Internet is have found that it “sleeps,” almost like a living creature. The finding will help scientists and policymakers develop better systems to measure and track Internet outages, such as those that struck the New York area after Hurricane Sandy and other disasters.  Understanding how the Internet sleeps will help them avoid confusing a sleeping Internet with an Internet outage. Check out their short video below.
