Design Jargon, Simplified #UX

Design Jargon, Simplified | Cooper We designers tend to like our fancy (and sometimes heady) terminology. The UX industry has gone through many different rounds of trying to define what we do, e.g. UX, service blueprints, journey maps. Describing our work can be exhausting for those who aren't immersed in our world.

Prototype usability testing? Avoid these common mistakes. #UX

Prototype usability testing? Avoid these common mistakes. Testing with wireframes is a fast and easy way of discovering usability issues during the early stages of the design process. Wireframes are a low fidelity version of the real thing, meaning they have lots of limitations that can affect the results of your usability study - or even completely ruin it - if you don't take some precautions.

Interview with Kid's First 3D Printing Book Maker - Carla Diana

Image
We just had to get the backstory of this incredible engineer, designer turned author - Carla Diana . She was promoting her book called " Leo the Maker Prince " at the 2014 Maker Faire - Bay Area. This is the first kid's book on 3D printing by MAKE  or Maker Media. Carla's mission is to invoke a sense of design at an early age(or kids at heart) with a great storytelling book about  Carla who wanted to become an artist when she grew up. She became an accountant instead(sound familiar out there?). Then, Carla’s life of numbers and “sense” was changed by meeting LEO, the Maker Prince. And through LEO’s magic of 3D printing—Carla finally became the artist she’d long ago wished to be. Watch our interview to get some insights on the book from Carla (the real Carla).

Design Advice

Image
Adobe software never stops being frustrating. Learn to write, and not school-style writing. A text editor is a perfectly viable design tool. Graphic design has just as much to do with words as it does with pictures, and a lot of my favorite designers come to design from the world of words instead of the world of pictures. If you meet a person who cares about the same obscure things you do, hold on to them for dear life. Sympathy is medicine. Scissors are good, music is better, and mixed drinks with friends are best. Start brave and brash: you can always make things more conservative, but it’s hard to make things more radical. From blog.frankchimero.com ( share this quote ) Stop trying to be cool: it is stifling. From blog.frankchimero.com ( share this quote ) Seeking advice is addicting and can become a proxy for action. Giving it can also be addicting in a potentially pretentious, soul-rotting sort of way, and can replace experimenting because you think you know how things work...

The Debate Between Data and Design is Stupid

Image
Personally, I think the whole face-off between design and data is, frankly, stupid. It makes for a good conflict story, but it doesn’t reflect reality. It’s a poor way to frame the debate. Data and design should be friends, not enemies. In web design, people click or they don’t. They stay or they go. That’s good to know. But I’ll get to that later.
