Weekend Review - First AI Generated Screenplay Results in a Decent Short

Image
Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch stars in AI Generated Sunspring In the wake of Google’s AI Go victory and recent  rematch ask , filmmaker Oscar Sharp turned to his technologist collaborator, Ross Goodwin, to build a machine that could write screenplays. They created ‘Jetson’ ,which the AI system renamed itself Benjamin, an LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) system and fueled him with hundreds of sci-fi TV and movie scripts. Building a team including  Thomas Middleditch , star of HBO’s  Silicon Valley , they gave themselves 48 hours to shoot and edit whatever Jetson decided to write.  The result is  Sunspring , a sci-fi short film starring Thomas Middleditch.  Ars Technica  channel on the  The Scene  has the film showing now. The Nerdy crew screened this nine min short, actually many times, because it was a little hard to get your head around it. In the beginning, the filmmaker - Oscar Sharp, tells the viewer that they fed movie...

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

“From Oscar-wining director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson’s life-his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell’s Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. Narrated by Johnny Depp.”

Air Guitar

Air Guitar Nation , the documentary about pro air guitarists, has been bouncing around the festival circuit to wide acclaim for the last year or so. Opening this Friday, 23 March 2007 (in limited release in NYC and L.A.), its day has come. In 2002 Krison Rucker happened to read in the Wall Street Journal that the International Air Guitar Championship was being held in Finland. He got his friend Cedric Devitt to join him and they went to Oulu, Finland to check it out. Cedric spontaneously entered the competition and came in fifth place. Upon returning to New York they decided that the U.S. had to compete the next year. They formed the U.S. Air Guitar Championships and teamed up with production company Magical Elves and director Alexandra Lipsitz to make a documentary about the whole process. Air Guitar Nation follows the competitons in NYC and L.A. to find the US Air Guitar champion, who will then go to Finland to compete for the world title. The two major contenders and characters are ...

No baby yet sheese

This is starting to get like those damn jack in the box toys, that seem all nice and luring with it's soft happy music just to stop and scare the shit out of you when that damn thing jumps out of the box in your face! So today we just ran mass errands all within a 5 block radius of my work, why cant i shake that place even on vacation. Speaking of I'm having some trouble getting out of "work" mode, I find that when 5ish rolls around I get all anxious like i've only got a finite amount of time do shit till it's time to go to bed. I need to get in vacation zen mode and it aint happening, I find myself creating daily to do lists then plowing through it, note to self, chill. I'm psyched Pan's Labyrinth is finally out at the Westfield and I've been dying to see it, do yourself a favor and do it as well.

It's silly to work after turkey day, well I did but right after, I went to hit the new Pedro Almodovar film "Volver" starring Penelope Cruz (has she had a boob job recently?). Nice to see Almodovar not relying on the overtly in your face sex scenes to get a human point across. But on the other hand I would like to see him divert from a recurring storyline that often relys mainly on some sort of "shocking" sexual incident to be the crux of his films. But I still recommend this flic.
